HOGOFOGO Bistro - Ostrava, Czech Republic

 

We were in Ostrava, Czech Republic, for the Konopex Conference and Calyx Cup (which was pretty fabulous). This little bistro popped up on our food radar, and off we went. It was jammed when we walked in the door on a Thursday night. The woman behind the bar asked if we had a reservation (which we did not). She looked worried and said, "Well, I have these three seats at the bar"—some of our favorite words to hear!

Once we were settled in and ordered up some of the local beer, we got down to business ordering a few shared plates.  We had ham and potato dumplings, a Vietnamese-style salad with beef, veggies, and noodles, grilled salmon with spring vegetables, and fall-off-the-bone spare ribs.  The menu changes weekly, but a few things stay all the time (like the ribs - and for good reason).  After consulting with our bartender for dessert, we ordered the mini donuts and mascarpone, caramel and peanuts.  Yep - that one is always on the menu...

When back in Ostrava - which we hope is soon - this is on the short list.  And next time we will book a table in advance!
